Metal Air Ionic Liquid Batteries – Next Generation of Batteries?

by Edward Xu on November 9, 2009

We have reviewed about the development of new alternative battery energy Zinc-Air batteries in the previous week. The Fluidic Energy has another solution known as Metal-Air-Ionic-Liquid (MAIL) that could simply improve energy storage by 11 times compare to standard lithium-ion battery.

This is also another great invention that will prolong the battery life of mobile devices such as notebooks, cars, cellphones, tablet, portable multimedia players, etc.

The “MAIL” has the stability performance and capability to store more energy compare to zinc-air batteries. The method is using an ionic liquid salt to conduct electricity that is much more stable and isn’t prone to drying out either by accident or by eventual decay. The move would let battery makers use metals denser than zinc and therefore hold a much larger charge in a given volume.

You might be wondering how far the comparison goes?  The researchers estimate they can boost battery efficiency to between 900 and 1,600 watt-hours (Whr) in a pack with a mass of one kilogram (2.2 pounds), or about 11 times the energy of lithium-ion.

For example an electric car, which particularly a focus and the reason for the government funding. A lithium-ion batteries powered Tesla Roadster could go for 244 miles, what about using the MAIL batteries? Could you figure out the numbers?
