by Edward Xu on November 27, 2009

We know that there are many iPhone users out there. And Microsoft seems to get the idea by collaborating with Apple to work on the Silverlight application to ease iPhone users on streaming online video.

Microsoft Silverlight application is using the IIS servers mechanism that support smooth streaming format of MPEG2 v8 directly, making it possible for streaming videos from the same server and same point of origin.

“We’re translating the content to support the MPEG2 v8 [decoder] format that the iPhone format; we’re moving it to their adaptive streaming format. So it’s the same IIS smooth streaming content, the same server, the same point of origin, but now I can get that content to play without any code changes, without any real work, on the iPhone. That’s the critical thing for our customers.” Said Microsoft User Experience Platform Manager Brian Goldfarb.

Since Netflix also using Microsoft’s Silverlight application, would this mean iPhone users will be able to enjoy Netflix service on their Apple iPhone?

Silverlight is a cross-browser, cross-platform and cross-device browser plug-in that helps companies design, develop and deliver applications and experiences on the Web. A free download that installs in seconds, Silverlight enables a new class of rich, secure and scalable cross-platform experiences.
