A journey of a thousand miles start from a single step! Perhaps that’s the wise saying that moved the top management in Volvo to encourage the development of long traveling distance vehicles in future EV and hybrid vehicles.

The new concept will operate on highly efficient hybrid mode. The project itself is supported by Swedish Energy Agency and the EU, the idea is to make a highly efficient engine that effectively turn the engine into a hybrid. There will be three different possible combinations, involving three-cylinder combustion engine that runs on both petrol and ethanol (E85), with the electric motor that moves the front wheels.

Two of the combinations that have been tested are based on the Volvo C30 Electric, while the third is based on the Volvo V60 Plug-in Hybrid. Volvo says all three concepts increase the vehicles’ range by up to 1,000 km (621 miles).

“These three projects allow us to evaluate the Range Extender’s various possibilities. As with the C30 Electric and V60 Plug-in Hybrid, the goal is to make the cars exceptionally CO2-lean without compromising on customer requirements such as comfort, driving pleasure and practicality,” added Crabb.
